Flights to San Francisco: Best ticket deals

A city made for love, not for walking. San Francisco is known for its extensive alternative culture history and incredibly steep hills. San Francisco conjures up images of peace signs, psychedelic rock music and hippies with flowers in their hair. San Francisco is still all that and much more.

With such a rich history, the hippy dream is still alive but somewhat supplanted by its growing reputation as a global centre for technology and innovation. These days, a self-dyed shirt is no longer entirely out of place in the financial district! The new San Francisco remains one of America‘s most liberal and progressive cities, retaining the laid-back Californian atmosphere for which the city is so famous.

Things to see and do in San Francisco

With very steep inclines, San Francisco’s streetcar system is a quick, easy, and relatively affordable way to get around. Of course, it can also be nice to walk, but crossing a few blocks can sometimes be quite tiring! San Fran is known for its unique, characterful neighbourhoods and the quality of its tourist attractions. If you’re new to the city, Fisherman’s Wharf is a great place to get your bearings and sample San Francisco’s famous fresh seafood.

The Wharf is home to some of the city’s most popular attractions, including the family-friendly Pier 39 with shops and aquarium and the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park. The Wharf even has its wax museum! From there, it’s just a short walk to Union Square, where you can get some serious retail therapy.

Diversity is a crucial feature of San Francisco, and the reason is that just exploring the different neighbourhoods can be an experience. San Fran is home to the largest Chinatown in the US. You can do your research here or accompanied by a guide. Little Italy is also a popular destination for tourists who want something different. Japan Town is also a good destination.

For a more traditional San Fran experience, head to the waterfront Embarcadero. There you will find spectacular bay views and numerous attractive restaurants. The Embarcadero also has a great farmers’ market selling the best fresh local produce if you prefer to make your own.

With so many activities, you also need a place to relax. The Golden Gate Park (next to the famous bridge) encompasses more than 400 hectares of beautiful greenery in which you can walk to your heart’s content. Or, if you want something completely different, head to Pier 33 and take a trip to the infamous prison island of Alcatraz! Fortunately, the ferry sells return tickets.
